ENVIRONMENT PORTFOLIO IN BELIZE
Within Central America, Belize sets a higher standard concerning environmental conservation and the protection of natural resources. National policies have created a variety of natural reserves, which serve to protect the biodiversity of the region. Despite a national sentiment sympathetic towards environmental issues, there are still environmental problems stemming from the need for grass roots efforts to share practical knowledge and experience with locals and a lack of practical experience in the execution of environmental projects. Problems remain with improper use of pesticides, traditional land clearing techniques, and poaching as well.
ProBelize Environmental Interns collaborate with local community partners in grass-roots efforts to protect the environment, working on projects such as forest conservation, national park maintenance, studying and documenting local medicinal plants, and helping to developing a variety of ecological projects.
